The Story

Get ready to kick things up a notch with this spicy shrimp dish! Ebi Chili is a Shanghai influenced dish, consisting of stir fried shrimp coated with a spicy and aromatic ginger garlic sauce.

Ebi chili was introduced in Japan in the 50s, and since then has been a very popular Chinese cuisine in Japan. It’s made with spicy chili bean paste (doubanjiang), but a lot of people find it too spicy and used ketchup instead! Feel free to put a little more ketchup or different hot sauces in to suit your tastes. Using sriracha instead is also really good!

I love this dish since it has such a unique, spicy flavor. Easy to throw together, if your shrimp is already peeled and deveined, it comes together in just 10 minutes. I know it looks like a lot of ingredients, but it’s all worth it for the amazing sauce! Ebi Chili is so popular though, that if you want to skip steps, premade sauce is often sold in Asian grocery stores. Served with some veggies and a bowl of rice, you’ve got everything you need to great meal. A quick and easy dish for seafood lovers to enjoy, it’s no wonder the Japanese love it so much!

I love making them just as I show below, but if you want to add a little extra texture, try dusting the shrimp in cornstarch before adding to the pan! It creates a wonderful crunch!
