Chestnuts

Chestnuts, or kuri (栗, くり) are a common nut used in fall Japanese foods. Chestnuts are seen as a symbol of fall, so they are are a very festive, cherished flavor that time of year. While they are a popular flavor for sweets, chestnuts can also be used in savory dishes, such as chestnut rice!

Chestnuts can be purchased whole or jarred in syrup. While the whole nuts might be hard to find, the jarred variety can be bought year round and are commonly used in sweets. Buy them and stock up, or even jar your own!

You'll need to buy this at your local asian market.
