Japanese comfort food at it’s finest, this easy beef dish is popular and filling! Thinly sliced beef simmered in a sweet, umami rich sauce, you can even top it off with some shichimi togarashi for some added heat!
Gyu means beef, and don refers to the dish, donburi, which means a rice bowl with some toppings. Put together, it’s a popular fast food in Japan, though a bit healthier than burgers and fries! Made popular by restaurants such as Yoshinoya, a lot of gyudon restaurants are open 24/7, so you can get your gyudon fix any time of day! Since it’s a pretty cheap meal, it makes for a great late night snack after drinking and a night on the town. Though I usually prefer it as a busy weeknight dinner, but hey, it’s good any time!
In Japan, gyudon and other rice bowls are often served with a raw egg on top, and you stir it together quickly to cook the egg in the bowl. I find it better to cook it quickly in the pan, since raw eggs are not recommended in the U.S.
