A little while ago I shared a recipe for tonkatsu, or fried pork cutlets. The key part of tonkatsu is it’s delicious sauce, with a unique taste somewhere right between barbeque sauce and steak sauce. It’s a rich flavor that plays its part in a lot of dishes, not just tonkatsu, but unfortunately, this sauce is not a common item abroad. The most popular brand is Bulldog Sauce, but unless you have a really well stocked Japanese grocery, you probably won’t find it. Luckily, the ingredients are all readily available, so even if you can’t buy it pre-made, you can easily make it yourself!
What other dishes can you serve it with? Another popular dish that highlights tonkatsu sauce is okonomiyaki, that weird Japanese pancake/pizza. I wanted to show you all how to make okonomiyaki, but I realized that first I needed to share with you the key sauce that ties the dish together! Whip this sauce up over the next few days, and by the time I finish my next post, you’ll be ready to go!
Recipe – Tonkatsu Sauce:
– Combine all the ingredients together and stir until well blended. Let sit for 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to blend.
